Aviation Radio

Licences, frequencies and phraseology – from the Federal Network Agency and radio trainers to the DFS VFR services.

On this site: Airspace and Radio · How a Radio Call Is Built · FIS, FMC and Emergencies

  • Bundesnetzagentur – radiotelephony certificates

The authority responsible for BZF II, BZF I, AZF and the English variants: exam registration, exam locations, fees and the binding question and answer catalogues as PDFs. The responsible body is the Federal Network Agency, not the Federal Aviation Office.

  • Flugfunk-Trainer

Free online question trainer for the BZF and AZF based on the official catalogue, in German and English. Good for exam preparation and brushing up.

  • Radiotelephony for ultralight pilots

A freely available script of around 40 pages with callsigns, standard phrases for departure, approach and landing, airspace classes, ATIS, FIS and distress and urgency calls. The focus is on use in the cockpit rather than on the exam. (German)

  • DFS – current VFR information

Ongoing VFR notices from air navigation services, for example on temporary restricted areas and changes to FIS procedures and frequencies. No substitute for the statutory flight preparation.

  • DULV – aviation radio and frequency assignment

Explains the frequency assignment certificate required for ultralight owners, including transponder and ELT, names the responsible regional offices and provides the application form and a sample certificate. Also covers the 8.33 kHz channel spacing.
